Gandhi Before India
Categories: Biographies & Memoirs, History
Ramachandra Guha's opening volume tracks Mohandas Gandhi from his birth in 1869 through law training at London's Inner Temple and failed starts as a lawyer in Rajkot and Bombay to his two decades in South Africa. Drawing on the private papers of Gandhi's friends and colleagues, police records and newspapers, Guha shows how protests against pass laws and registration in Johannesburg led Gandhi to satyagraha, and how the Phoenix Settlement and Tolstoy Farm shaped him before his return to India in 1914.
