Freak Kingdom: Hunter S. Thompson's Manic Ten-Year Crusade Against American Fascism
Categories: Biographies & Memoirs, Politics & Social Sciences
Freak Kingdom (PublicAffairs, 2018) is Timothy Denevi's account of Hunter S. Thompson's political journalism from the Kennedy assassination in 1963 to Nixon's resignation in 1974. Denevi argues that the gonzo persona hid a serious defender of democratic values. He follows Thompson through his clash with police at the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago, his 1970 Freak Power run for sheriff in Aspen, Colorado, and his coverage of George McGovern's 1972 run for Rolling Stone, the basis of Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72.
