Categories: Literature & Fiction
Philip Roth's 2007 novel, the last of the Zuckerman books, follows Nathan Zuckerman, now seventy-one, back to New York after eleven years alone in the Berkshires. There for medical treatment, he meets Amy Bellette, now old and ill, is drawn to a young married woman, and gets tangled with a would-be biographer of E. I. Lonoff as he faces age and failing powers.

- Barack Obama: “Some of the great books by Jewish authors like Philip Roth or Saul Bellow, they are steeped with this sense of being an outsider, longing to get in, not sure what you're giving up — what you're willing to give up and what you're not willing to give up.”
