End Times

End Times (2023) by complexity scientist Peter Turchin asks why societies fall into long stretches of unrest, and what history says about the United States. Drawing on a database of past societies, Turchin argues that crises follow two trends: falling living standards for ordinary workers and a surplus of would-be elites competing for too few positions of power. He traces the pattern through history and applies it to American politics.
