Devil Take the Hindmost: A History of Financial Speculation
Categories: Business & Money, History
Financial historian Edward Chancellor tells the story of speculation from ancient Rome to the late twentieth century. He describes famous episodes such as the Dutch tulip mania, the South Sea Bubble, the railway mania, the 1929 crash and the Japanese bubble of the 1980s. Chancellor shows how speculation reflects human nature and the culture of its time, and argues that the same patterns of greed and folly repeat in every era.
