Tom Franklin's crime novel is set in rural Mississippi, where two boys, one white and one Black, became friends in the 1970s. Decades later, Larry Ott lives as an outcast, suspected of killing a girl who disappeared after a date with him, while Silas Jones has returned home as the town's constable. When another girl goes missing, suspicion falls again on Larry and old secrets resurface. The novel won the Crime Writers' Association Gold Dagger.
