J. G. Ballard's controversial 1973 novel follows a narrator named James Ballard who, after surviving a car accident, joins a group of people sexually obsessed with car crashes. Led by Vaughan, a former television scientist, the group stages and photographs collisions and dreams of dying in a crash with the actress Elizabeth Taylor. Ballard uses the story to explore how technology, celebrity and media shape modern desire. The novel was adapted into a film by David Cronenberg in 1996.
