Count Belisarius
Categories: History, Literature & Fiction
Robert Graves's 1938 historical novel follows Belisarius, the general who recovered much of the western Roman world for the Byzantine emperor Justinian in the sixth century, fighting Persians, Vandals and Goths. The story is told by Eugenius, a eunuch in the service of Belisarius's wife, Antonina. Graves drew heavily on the histories of Procopius, Belisarius's secretary, but his narrator defends Belisarius and Antonina against the hostile Secret History, portrays Justinian as corrupt and suspicious and makes Theodora Antonina's friend.
