Historian Elliott West's sweeping history of the American West from the 1840s to the 1880s, when the United States acquired vast territories, fought wars with Mexico and Native nations, and bound the continent together with railroads. West argues that the West's transformation was as central to remaking the nation as the Civil War. The book won the 2024 Bancroft Prize and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist.
