Contact is a 1985 science fiction novel by the American astronomer Carl Sagan, his only novel. Ellie Arroway, a radio astronomer, detects a signal from the star Vega containing instructions for building a mysterious machine. As the world debates what the message means, governments build the machine and Ellie is chosen for its first journey. Exploring the meeting points of science and faith, the novel was adapted into the 1997 film starring Jodie Foster, released after Sagan's death in 1996.
