Common Sense
By Thomas Paine
Categories: History, Politics & Social Sciences
Common Sense is a pamphlet by Thomas Paine, published anonymously in Philadelphia in January 1776, that made the case for American independence from Great Britain in plain, persuasive language. Paine attacked monarchy and hereditary succession, argued that it was absurd for an island to rule a continent, and urged the colonies to form their own republic. The pamphlet sold in great numbers during 1776 and helped turn public opinion toward the Declaration of Independence.
