Close to Home (2023) is Michael Magee's debut novel, set in his native West Belfast and published in the US by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Sean is back in Belfast after university, sliding into old habits: all-nighters, borrowed money, missed rent and casual jobs that fall through. At a party one night he lashes out at a stranger, and the assault charge forces him to face his brothers, his mother and the things his family never discusses.

- Sarah Jessica Parker: “[Best books of 2023] They are all glorious, radically and wonderfully different from one another, and simply share one ingredient - supremely gifted authors.”
