Childhood and Society is a 1950 book by the German-born American psychoanalyst Erik H. Erikson. It is best known for setting out his eight stages of psychosocial development, the "Eight Ages of Man", which trace how identity forms from infancy to old age. Erikson draws on clinical cases and on his fieldwork with Sioux and Yurok communities, and closes with essays on American identity, the legend of Hitler's childhood and the youth of Maxim Gorky.
