In this 1997 Alex Cross novel, the Washington detective faces his old enemy Gary Soneji, who has escaped from prison and is determined to take revenge on Cross and his family. At the same time, a second killer known as Mr. Smith is murdering people across Europe, and the investigation draws in FBI agent Thomas Pierce. The two cases eventually collide in a race through Washington and London.
