California: A History
By Kevin Starr
Categories: History
California: A History is a concise history of the Golden State by Kevin Starr, the historian and former California State Librarian. Starr traces California from its Native American peoples and Spanish missions through the Gold Rush, statehood, railroads, Hollywood, the aerospace boom and the rise of Silicon Valley. He shows how migration, water, agriculture and politics shaped the state, and how California became a cultural and economic force that often shapes the rest of the United States.

- Arnold Schwarzenegger: “The other one I think is California by Kevin Starr... If anyone is at all interested in a book about California, what makes California unique and special, and the history of it, the political history of it and all the little details, that's a good book to have. It's a great gift... It's the kind of reading I like and that I like to share with other people.”
