Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community
Categories: Politics & Social Sciences
Bowling Alone (2000) is political scientist Robert D. Putnam's study of the decline of community life in the United States in the late twentieth century. Using large amounts of survey data, he shows that Americans joined fewer clubs, churches, unions and bowling leagues, voted less and saw friends and neighbors less often. Putnam calls this a loss of social capital, weighs causes such as television, suburban sprawl and generational change, and suggests ways to rebuild civic ties.
