Joe Jackson's biography of Black Elk (1863–1950), the Oglala Lakota holy man known from Black Elk Speaks. It follows his life from his boyhood vision through the Battle of the Little Bighorn, his travels with Buffalo Bill's Wild West, the Wounded Knee massacre and his later work as a Catholic catechist, set against the upheaval of the Lakota world. It won the PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography and the Francis Parkman Prize.
