Beneath the Surface: My Story by Michael Phelps with Brian Cazeneuve is a memoir, first published in 2004 and later updated. Phelps describes growing up in Baltimore, being diagnosed with ADHD and finding focus in the pool under coach Bob Bowman. He recounts his early races, his first Olympics in 2000 and his performances at the Games that followed, and gives a view of the training, competition and setbacks behind his career as a swimmer.
