Back to the Stone Age (1937), the fifth of Edgar Rice Burroughs's Pellucidar books, follows Lieutenant Wilhelm von Horst, a German officer from the airship expedition of the previous Pellucidar story, who is stranded alone beneath the Earth's crust. Unarmed, he must survive among Pellucidar's prehistoric beasts and warring tribes, including the pale, cannibal Gorbuses, while he tries to win La-ja, a proud young woman of the Lo-har.
