In Autocracy, Inc. (2024), historian and journalist Anne Applebaum describes how authoritarian regimes such as those in Russia, China, Iran, Venezuela and North Korea cooperate to stay in power. Applebaum argues that these governments are linked less by shared ideology than by networks of kleptocratic finance, surveillance technology and propaganda. She shows how they help one another evade sanctions and undermine democratic movements, and sets out how democracies can counter them.
