Autobiography of Red
By Anne Carson
Categories: Literature & Fiction
Autobiography of Red (1998) is a novel in verse by Canadian poet and classicist Anne Carson, based on fragments by the ancient Greek poet Stesichorus about the red, winged monster Geryon and the hero Herakles. Carson recasts Geryon as a shy, artistic boy with wings who falls in love with the charismatic Herakles as a teenager. Years later, travelling in South America, Geryon meets Herakles again with a new companion, and the old attachment returns.
