Ash-Wednesday

By T. S. Eliot

T. S. Eliot's Ash-Wednesday, first published in 1930, was his first long poem after he joined the Church of England in 1927. It is written in six parts and draws on the language of the liturgy, Dante and the Bible. The poem follows a speaker's struggle to turn from worldly desire and despair toward faith, humility and spiritual renewal. It stands between The Waste Land and Four Quartets and marks the turn toward religious themes in his later poetry.
