An Artist of the Floating World
Categories: Literature & Fiction
Set in an unnamed Japanese city in the years after World War II, Kazuo Ishiguro's 1986 novel is narrated by Masuji Ono, a retired painter who is trying to arrange a marriage for his younger daughter, Noriko. As the negotiations unfold, Ono is drawn to look back at his career, including the patriotic, imperialist art he made in the 1930s, and at how that work appears to his family, his former students and a younger generation.
