American on Purpose (2009) is a memoir by comedian and talk show host Craig Ferguson about growing up in Scotland and building a life in the United States. Ferguson recalls his childhood in Cumbernauld, his years as a punk drummer and stand-up, and a long struggle with alcohol that ended when he got sober in 1992. He follows his path to Hollywood and The Late Late Show, and explains why he chose to become an American citizen in 2008.
