American Legend (2005) is Buddy Levy's biography of David Crockett, the Tennessee frontiersman who became a folk hero. Levy separates the man from the myths of the coonskin cap, following Crockett's poor childhood, his service as a hunter and scout in the Creek War, his election to Congress, where he opposed Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Act, and his journey to Texas, where he died at the Alamo in 1836. The book also shows how Crockett helped create his own legend.
