American Creation: Triumphs and Tragedies in the Founding of the Republic (2007) by Joseph J. Ellis is a history of the founding of the United States. Ellis examines six episodes from 1775 to 1803, including the decision for independence, the winter at Valley Forge, the drafting of the Constitution, the creation of political parties, a failed treaty with the Creek Nation and the Louisiana Purchase, weighing the founders' achievements against their failures, especially on slavery and Native Americans.
