A Song of Stone

During a civil war in an unnamed country, the aristocrat Abel and his lover Morgan leave their castle and join the stream of refugees on the roads. They are soon stopped by a band of irregular soldiers led by a woman known only as the Lieutenant. The soldiers take over the castle, and Abel, who narrates in elaborate, formal prose, watches as the world he knew comes apart. The novel explores war, class and violence.
