A Land So Strange: The Epic Journey of Cabeza de Vaca
Categories: Biographies & Memoirs, History
In 1528 some three hundred men of Pánfilo de Narváez's expedition landed near Tampa Bay, lost contact with their ships, built crude rafts and were wrecked on the Texas coast. Only four survived: Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, Alonso del Castillo, Andrés Dorantes and the enslaved North African Estebanico. Andrés Reséndez follows them through years of servitude among Indigenous peoples, their escape and their reinvention as traveling healers, as they crossed Texas and northern Mexico on foot to reach Spanish territory near Culiacán in 1536.
