A History of Burning (2023) is Janika Oza's debut novel, a family saga spanning India, Uganda, England and Canada. In 1898 Pirbhai boards a dhow on the promise of work and is taken to labor on the East African Railway for the British, where he makes a choice that will echo for generations. His granddaughters Latika, Mayuri and Kiya come of age in a newly independent Uganda until Idi Amin's 1972 expulsion of South Asians forces the family to start over in Toronto.
